Week 1 Homework

NOTE 1:   ALL HOMEWORK SHOULD BE DONE ON LEASH AND COLLAR NO MATTER HOW GOOD YOUR PUPPY GETS AT IT.

NOTE 2:   IF POSSIBLE, HOMEWORK SHOULD BE DONE INSIDE.   WE AREN'T QUITE READY TO START WITH THE DISTRACTION OF OUTSIDE WHILE HE DOES HIS WORK.   HE IS DISTRACTED BY THINGS LIKE THE DOOR OPENING INSIDE, THE TRUCK STARTING UP OUTSIDE, AND SO ON.  IT WILL BE ENOUGH FOR HIM AND YOU TO FOCUS ON THE MECHANICS INSIDE.

NOTE 3:  DO ONE EXERCISE, THEN LET SOCRATES REST FOR A TIME.  DO THESE ALL SEPERATELY AT DIFFERENT TIMES DURING THE DAY.   EXCEPT FOR THE SIT ON THE DOG EXERCISE (AND POSSIBLY THE LONG PLACE IF YOU GET THAT FAR), YOU ONLY WANT TO WORK HIM FOR A MAX OF 15 MINUTES.

NOTE 4:  ITEMS IN BLUE GO TO THE DIRECTIONS OR VIDOES OF THAT EXERCISE.

NOTE 5:  Please read everything in the blog at least once.   I also suggest reading the directions for the exercise before or after doing them.  In this way, you might catch yourself missing a step.

NOTE 6:  I need to rewrite these blogs for my more recent use of marker words.   So if you see "BREAK" to release that is no longer used.  The markers that I use are:  Good= Good job and  keep going which could be used as encouragement during an exercise, Yes=Release and exercise is done for now, No=That is not what I am looking for to encourage them to try again once they get it.

  1. Sit on The Dog [video] should take about 35-37 minutes in low distractions.
  2. Heeling [video] should be practiced for 15 minutes at a time.   Don't do it on outside walks right now.
  3. Molded Sits [video] (usually I do 100 reps that in total take 20 minutes, but I split up the reps) 50 reps (divide in half for two different times during the day) for a total of 10 minutes (5 minutes a piece).
  4. Introduction to your place [video] that you set up at home should take 15 reps or less than 5 minutes.   You only need to do the introduction once.
  5. Send to Place [video] you want to do for 10 minutes or less (you want to get 3 sets of 4 in a row reps without correction basically).
  6. Circle Place [video]  I usually deduct the send to place time from 15 minutes, and use that remainder to do circle place.    So it could be 5-10 minutes.
  7. Long Place [video] you can practice for 5 minutes at first, and then work this up to 30 minutes.  If you get to 30 minutes, you can rotate this exercise with Sit on the Dog on different days.
